Celebrate Garifuna Settlement Day https://www.barbsbelize.com/celebrate-garifuna-settlement-day/ Sun, 10 Nov 2019 21:23:36 +0000 http://162.222.226.70/~barbsbelize/?p=15689 Garifuna Settlement Day is coming up on Monday, November 19th and marks an important part of Belizean culture.

The Garifuna people are a mix of African, Carib, and Arawak, due to African slaves being brought to Caribbean islands by the British to work on plantations. During a struggle for independence, the Garifuna people were deported and made their way to the shores of Belize on November 19, 1802.

The culture is important to Belize, and well known for their dance, music, and drumming. While the biggest celebrations are held in areas with larger Garifuna populations such as Dangriga, the day is celebrated nationally with street dances, traditional foods, and cultural displays, making it a wonderful time to experience more than just Belize’s beaches.

This just in… https://www.barbsbelize.com/this-just-in/ Mon, 23 Sep 2019 21:18:43 +0000 http://162.222.226.70/~barbsbelize/?p=15687 Just received this lovely review from a recent client… Belize was great! An absolutely wonderful vacation…..Still trying to figure out how to explain the loving atmosphere of Sleeping Giant (Rainforest Lodge) in words.
They have created a sanctuary….a base of operations for explorations…a spa…a place of restoration ….
Somehow it reflects the love of the land, the preservation of the rainforest, and everything is so Tastefully presented and carefully cultivated to provide us with an awesome experience. Oh yes and then there’s the restaurant which provides food which is healthy and tasteful Farm to Table, again prepared with love.

Or I could tell you about a sailing excursion around the northern Reef of Belize with a captain and crew who knew everything about the reef and all of its inhabitants. When the cruise ships and tour boats came in, when they went out and when we should be on the reef… and when and where we should be on the reef exactly the best time of day to appreciate all the life that is on it. If we even mentioned the food we’d like to try, somehow it would appear on the menu.

Belize is a beautiful country with beautiful people with loving hearts. We hope to grab our boys and head back down there another day because it was that great. Thank you for all your fantastic ideas and help.

It’s about time…. https://www.barbsbelize.com/its-about-time/ Fri, 23 Aug 2019 21:10:50 +0000 http://162.222.226.70/~barbsbelize/?p=15685 On March 20, 2018, a collaborative government task force involving the Ministry of Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Commerce introduced a proposal that was approved by Belize’s Cabinet that will completely phase out the sale and distribution of single-use plastic shopping bags, Styrofoam food items, and plastic food utensils by April 22, 2019.
Currently, single-use food-grade plastic waste and shopping bags are responsible for an estimated 19% of all solid waste in Belize. The new law will work to stem the pollution of the environment by single-use plastic food items and shopping bags, especially in coastal and offshore areas, that are both an eyesore as well as a hazard to animals.
Every year, the government, volunteer groups, and local NGOs perform clean-ups of highways, rivers, lagoons, and coastal areas in order to restore the natural beauty of the country and to protect wildlife. Animals and birds often mistake plastic pieces for food, which can pose a choking hazard as well as potentially causing fatal injuries.
Regionally, the issue of Styrofoam and plastic pollution is a major concern for Caribbean nations. Large masses of offshore floating plastic debris have begun to affect the health of coral reefs as well as causing a detrimental effect on the tourism industry. Belize has been a regional leader in responsible environmental stewardship, having previously banned all offshore drilling as well as establishing Central America’s largest wildlife corridor. Over half of Belize’s territory is already designated as a protected environmental area or national park.
